A Singaporean woman, Noorwahidah Johari, was sentenced to four weeks in jail for assaulting her maid, Putri Rizki Amelia, by pouring soy sauce over her head and throwing chili at her. The incident occurred in September 2023 when Noorwahidah, frustrated with Putri’s work, poured soy sauce on her after a dispute over its storage. Putri challenged her to pour the entire bottle, which Noorwahidah did. Additionally, in a separate incident, Noorwahidah threw chili at Putri, causing irritation to her eyes.
The court also heard that on another occasion, Noorwahidah twisted Putri’s ear and made derogatory remarks about her inability to afford expensive furniture after smelling an odor on the couch. Putri reported the abuse to the police, detailing instances of verbal and physical mistreatment, including being forced to sleep in the kitchen and threatened with a fine if she reported the incidents.
During the trial, the prosecution highlighted a “pattern of abuse” by Noorwahidah, seeking a sentence of five to nine weeks’ jail. Noorwahidah’s lawyer argued that the incidents were brief and did not result in lasting injuries to Putri. The defense attributed the actions to Noorwahidah’s frustration with Putri’s work performance and her instructions not being followed, stating that the defendant deeply regrets her behavior.
The defense further emphasized that the defendant’s actions were out of character and that a lengthy prison term would have adverse effects on her young children and elderly parents, who depend on her. Noorwahidah expressed remorse for her actions, acknowledging that she had lost control of her temper. The court ultimately sentenced her to four weeks’ imprisonment for the offenses.
The case sheds light on the importance of fair treatment and respect for domestic workers, highlighting the legal repercussions of mistreatment and abuse in employer-employee relationships. It underscores the need for effective regulations and enforcement mechanisms to safeguard the rights and well-being of domestic workers, ensuring a safe and conducive working environment for all.
