A recent study suggests that incorporating soy products and vegan meat into one’s diet can be beneficial for weight loss efforts. The research conducted by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine highlights the potential of plant-based foods, particularly ultra-processed vegan meat and soy milk, in aiding significant weight reduction.
Processed foods, characterized by high levels of sugar, salt, and fat, are widely recognized as contributors to weight gain, obesity, and various health issues. By opting for plant-based alternatives like soy milk and vegan meat over animal products, individuals may experience positive outcomes in terms of weight management and overall well-being.
Hana Kahleova, the director of clinical research at the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, emphasizes the importance of selecting plant-based options, even if they are classified as ultra-processed. Swapping traditional animal-based foods for plant-based substitutes, such as soy milk and vegan meat, can have a notable impact on weight loss and general health.
The study, published in the journal Nutrition & Metabolism, observed participants who shifted towards a vegan diet by reducing animal product consumption and increasing plant-based food intake. This dietary change resulted in an average weight loss of 5.9 kilograms among the participants, whereas the control group showed minimal changes in weight.
Key factors influencing weight loss included a decrease in the consumption of processed animal foods like smoked fish, unprocessed or minimally processed animal products such as milk and beef, and ultra-processed animal items like cheese and fried chicken. The weight reduction was attributed to a lower calorie and fat intake, higher fiber consumption, and increased post-meal metabolism, as noted by the researchers.
The study underscores the significance of plant-based processed foods, such as canned beans, cereal, and veggie burgers, as integral components of a healthy diet that can combat the rise of chronic diet-related diseases. By making informed dietary choices and incorporating soy-based products and vegan alternatives, individuals may enhance their weight loss journey and promote better overall health.
