The Illinois Soybean Association (ISA) has launched the SpringBoard Seed Funding Challenge to drive sustainable innovation in soy-based non-food applications. This challenge marks a significant step in promoting the versatility of soybeans beyond traditional food products. The initiative aims to identify and support early-stage innovations that harness the potential of soy in creating sustainable alternatives for various everyday products.
The announcement of the SpringBoard Seed Funding Challenge took place during the inaugural SpringBoard Event at the Distillery Labs innovation hub in Peoria, Illinois. This event served as a platform to bring together researchers, industry leaders, and investors to foster collaboration, accelerate commercialization, and explore new market opportunities for agricultural-based products.
Researchers, students, scientists, and innovators from the United States and around the world are invited to participate in the challenge. The SpringBoard Seed Funding Challenge, an initiative of ISA’s Soy Innovation Center (SIC), aims to cultivate cross-sector partnerships and early-stage innovations that can open up new markets for soy-based non-food products.
John Lumpe, the CEO of ISA, emphasized the potential for soybeans grown by Illinois farmers to address material challenges when paired with the right innovators and resources. The challenge seeks to link researchers and entrepreneurs with the necessary support to drive impactful change in the industry.
By promoting soy as a renewable platform for innovation, ISA and the SIC aim to reshape industrial supply chains. Various byproducts of soy production, such as hulls, glycerin, and soy protein, hold promise in replacing fossil fuel-derived inputs in products like bioplastics, lubricants, textiles, and PFAS substitutes.
The SpringBoard Seed Funding Challenge targets five critical sustainability categories where soy-based inputs can potentially replace petrochemicals. These categories include bioplastics, lubricants, PFAS substitutes, biopolymers, and biofibers, each presenting unique technical challenges and innovation criteria.
Todd Main, ISA’s Director of Market Development, highlighted that the challenge goes beyond providing funding and aims to foster a community of innovators dedicated to commercializing sustainable materials. The initiative seeks to support the next generation of sustainable solutions by encouraging collaboration and innovation.
Jeannette Tamayo, Executive Director of the Illinois Innovation Network (IIN), emphasized the importance of cross-sector collaboration in driving sustainable innovation. By bringing together research universities, entrepreneurs, and the agricultural sector, the challenge creates opportunities to transform soy into impactful solutions for current material challenges.
The SpringBoard Seed Funding Challenge will proceed in two stages: the submission of concept papers by May 30, 2025, and the submission of detailed proposals by August 15, 2025. Winning projects will receive seed funding of up to $40,000 to further develop their innovations.
ISA and the SIC are actively seeking research institutions and commercialization partners to enhance local processing capacity and explore feasibility studies for U.S.-based, soy-derived production systems. This collaborative effort aims to drive innovation and sustainability in the soy industry for the benefit of farmers and consumers alike.
