The Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences has launched a new initiative to combat soybean pests and diseases, recognizing the crucial role of crop protection in ensuring national food security and meeting production targets. This move comes in response to the growing importance of soybean production in China, with a focus on enhancing capacity and reducing reliance on imports.

The initiative was officially inaugurated with the establishment of a coordination group in Beijing, signaling a strategic shift towards organized scientific research within the academy. Led by Lu Yanhui, the head of the Institute of Plant Protection, the group aims to drive innovation in products and technologies for controlling major soybean pests and diseases.
Wang Guirong, the leader of the coordination group, outlined ambitious plans to mobilize over 40 scientists across 27 research projects. These projects will concentrate on various aspects, including the biology of soybean pests and diseases, advanced monitoring technologies, and novel prevention strategies.

As soybean cultivation takes center stage in China’s agricultural agenda, efforts to enhance production and ensure safety have gained momentum. Cao Yongsheng, CAAS’s vice-president, emphasized the direct link between soybean safety, national food security, and public health, underscoring the need for integrated research and practical applications.
